Marsh Marigolds at Hancock Lake
Marsh marigolds bloom on the shores of Hancock Lake just below the Continental Divide in Chafee County, Colordao. This lake is an access point for the continental divide trail. This image required multiple blended images to properly expose the shadows, as well as focus stacking to get crisp marsh marigolds in the foreground. Trying to pull off a blended image like this without a tripod is not advisable--trust me, I've tried!

The remnants of a winter snow storm hang over the mountain range as dawn breaks on Park County Road 5 at the base of Weston Pass. Although winter has its downsides, the turbulent weather can certainly make for some beautiful sunrises--if you're there to see them!

Brilliant red willows cover the floor of the valley of Spring Creek on the Rio Grande National Forest. Winter is often seen as a bleak and colorless season, but I find that the colors are just different. Sometimes the colors are more subtle and gentle, and sometimes they bring lovely contrasts.

Trout Lake Trestle
One of my favorite things about exploring places is finding treasures and little chunks of history tucked away in the hills and the valleys. This was one such find as I wandered around random back roads with my dad toward the end of my trip. This railroad trestle carried trains long ago--trains loaded with people and supplies over this creek and through the canyons to the booming mining town of Telluride. It makes me wonder, what will I find the next time I go wandering? All the more reason to go, I say!
Sneffels Fog
After the first snow of the season fell on the jagged ridge leading up to Mt. Sneffles, the fog stuck around all day. Teasing the eyes searching for the massive peaks concealed beneath, it danced around the slopes all day before finally settling in a thick blanket for the evening. Here is one glimpse that the fog allowed of Mt. Sneffels with the gorgeous colors of fall in the foreground.
Porphyry Basin Creek #2
The flowers were in full force as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon. The jagged ridges above the basin were casting long shadows, and the tranquility of the evening settled over the valley. It was a day that reminded me that a day in the mountains is a good day.

Lost Creek Sunset
The sun sets for the day over the knobby ridges of the Lost Creek Wilderness. After two long days of hiking, this view from a rock perched above Lost Creek itself was quite a welcome treat!

Section House and Boreas Mountain
Boreas Mountain glows with the last light of the evening while Section House rests in the shade. Thank you again to 10th Mountain Division Hut Association and Summit Huts Association for maintaining a great piece of history and a wonderful shelter from both the chaos of life and Boreas' steady winds.
